The United Arab Emirates has announced a “Blue visa” for individuals who have made exceptional contributions and efforts to protect the environment anywhere in the world.

The Blue visa was introduced by the UAE in alignment with its directive to designate 2024 as the ‘Year of Sustainability’ in the UAE. Its aim is to attract sustainable talent to the UAE to move along the country’s sustainable development and innovations.

Individuals who have made “extraordinary contributions” to protect the environment will qualify for the 10-year residency visa. The field of their contribution may be in marine life, environmental protection, ecosystems, air quality, technology, the circular economy, or related fields, which opens the visa up for a wide range of professionals.

According to the UAE Cabinet announcement, the Blue visa will specifically be granted to “supporters of environmental action, including members of international organisations, international companies, members of associations and non-governmental organisations, global award winners, and distinguished activists and researchers in environmental work”.

Sustainability experts can apply for the Blue visa directly from the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security. Nomination by relevant UAE authorities is another route for application.

More details on the Blue visa are forthcoming.
